Each year in the month of June Lexington Fairness presents the annual Fairness Awards as a part of Lexington's pride month festivities. This Awards program is designed to recognize those individuals or organizations who devote 110% to keeping Lexington a safe and tolerant city for its GLBT community. To encourage everyone’s participation we open the Fairness Awards nomination process to the public. There are four award categories:
ALLY FOR FAIRNESS AWARD This award is dedicated to the straight allies of the GLBT community that stand up for GLBT rights - just because it's the right thing to do. Oftentimes, our straight allies stand up and fight more fiercely for fairness than do the GLBT members of our community.
FAIRNESS LEADERSHIP AWARD This award is dedicated to those among us who inspire us to join together and push forward in the face of adversity. When the times get tough, these members of our community push ahead and motivate those around them to get things done. This award is for the firebrands among us - full of energy and vitality.
THE JENNIFER CROSSEN OUT FOR FAIRNESS AWARD This award is dedicated to the members of our community who are leaders and role models and are out for no other reason than to increase the visibility of the GLBT community. These are people who let others know "We're Here!" and do so in a positive and uplifting manner.
POLITICAL LEADERSHIP AWARD This award is reserved for those among us who do the most to ensure that the GLBT community is afforded equal protection under the law - not special rights, just human rights. Whether it is protecting domestic partnership benefits at our local universities, championing anti-bullying initiatives, or standing up against legislation designed specifically to divide, this award will honor the person who works the hardest just to make things fair. All nominations will be presented to the Awards Selection Committee – a small but diverse group of people with years of experience in community service. The committee will make its final decision and the awards recipients will be announced during the evening of the Fairness Awards. Ticket Sales will be conducted online using our Paypal merchant account and are available now. All ticket sales benefit Lexington Fairness, Inc., a non-profit organization and are tax-deductable. About this year's event entertainers: The Judy Show
Michael Holmes is a regular entertainer on stages throughout the country best known for his popular creation The Judy Show in which he impersonates the likes of Judy Garland, Carol Channing and Bette Davis. He has been entertaining audiences from Maui to Manhattan for several years in these charaters to rave reviews. Although he has been singing his whole life, it is only since 2004 that Michael has been stepping out of theatrical characters and claiming his place among West Michigan's top jazz vocalists and the audience response has been overwhelming! Originally from Chicago, Michael moved to Saugatuck, MI in 1997 to explore the possibilities of a career in entertainment and has been working in the entertainment industry ever since. Jazz standards are Holme's genre of choice and he is truly honored to share the satge with such terrific jazz veterans as Mark Kahny and Bobby Thompson. Robbie Bartlett has been performing in Louisville area nightclubs since 1982. Her talent and strong sense of musical direction is electric and engaging. Robbie and her warm, smokey alto voice are heard regularly at popular clubs. She started singing at the age of four and has a strong foundation in blues and jazz. Her styles include music that complements the blues and includes such tunes and artists as "Respect" by Aretha Franklin, "Good Morning Heartache" by Billie Holiday, "Give Me One Reason" by Tracy Chapman, and "Love Sneaking Up on You" by Bonnie Raitt. Robbie did 3 tours in Europe to packed houses each time. When the Louisville Palace was renovated, Robbie was called to perform in Stagedoor Johnnie's, the adjoining nightclub. When the Palace booked Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Sheryl Crow, The Righteous Brothers and many others, Robbie and her band opened the shows. David Crosby and Graham Nash specifically asked for Robbie Bartlett to perform before and after their concert. B.B.King sent word back through his daughter (Shirley King) after hearing me sing with her and her band, " Who is that? I like her voice". Robbie is in high demand at outdoor festivals, weddings, birthdays, country club activities, and fundraisers.
